Just published moments, ago, by Mickaboo’s Development Director, Pamela Lee:

o Our Mickaboo Community,

It is with much sadness that I report Mickaboo’s Board yesterday declared a moratorium on intakes while we better our financial condition. A moratorium is a painful undertaking for a rescue whose mission is at least partially based on helping those in dire need.  That said, we have an obligation to the birds already in our foster flock. We all have the opportunity to make this moratorium a short one, due to the existence of an exciting Challenge Grant (see below for details).

Mickaboo’s funds were drawn down to almost nothing due to the high number of our birds recently requiring extended hospitalization. Among these birds are Fred and George (pictured at left), a pair of mitred conures from the iconic Wild Flock of Telegraph Hill.  Mickaboo received these birds after their rescuer caught them – they had been hanging out on her balcony and looked ill.  They continue to be treated for metal toxicity.  Their May vet bills totaled over $4,000 (!) and they continue to need medical assistance.

Another of these birds is Benji, the orange lovebird at right.  An eclectus opened Benji’s cage and nearly bit off her beak! Fortunately, a vet was able to reattach skin to the beak and repair Benji’s other wounds.  Unfortunately, Benji’s vet bill totals almost $2,400.

While Fred and George came separately to Mickaboo, they are now best friends.  Mickaboo itself is lucky to have friends – and generous ones at that!  A group of wonderful supporters created a Challenge Grant of $10,500 (I said these people were generous!).  A la KQED’s challenge grant, every donation received by mail or online between now and midnight Pacific Time on May 31 will be matched by this grant at a rate of 50% until matching funds run out.

Donate by May 31 and make your gift eligible for the Challenge Grant by:

  • Sending a check to Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue, PO Box 697, San Jose, CA  95106
  • Donating online via the link on the left of our homepage,

The birds and volunteers of Mickaboo appreciate a gift of ANY amount at any time, and especially now because of the Challenge Grant opportunity. Thank you again for your ongoing support of our mission.

Yours truly,

Pamela A Lee
Development Director
